Scouts enjoying the Outdoors

Date: 2nd Sep 2021 Author: Cathy Mollart

One of this year’s summer activities was rafting. Rafting was fun, because we got to design the raft together as a patrol, then test them on the water.  After we made the raft, we lifted it in to the water and tried to paddle around the island on the lake.  After a few sessions of making rafts, designs and ability to paddle them improved. I learned that the best rafts built had to be near enough symmetrical.

Along with rafting we also did kayaking, archery, some community service and some pioneering.

Whilst mentioning pioneering, I really enjoyed building and using a dead man’s crawl (one-strand rope bridge).  We made two A-frames with wood spars.  We then suspended, tensioned and anchored the rope between the two frames and enjoyed trying to crawl across without twisting around the rope.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
